The closed minds that deny a civilisation’s glories – where I was quoted
I was most pleased to read this piece by Yasmin Alibhai-Brown entitled The closed minds that deny a civilisation’s glories. I would like to thank Yasmin Alibhai, whom I have always respected for her integrity and courage, to have quoted a few hurried lines posted by me in response to tge butchery perpeterated by the extremists in Pakistan and elsewhere:
Muslims are seeing Koranic injunctions where none exist
Confused Dad Mohamed from somewhere in the US sends his dilemma to an Islamic guidance website through whom Allah apparently communicates his orders – on how we dress, what we do minute by minute, unholy TV programmes, wicked vitamins and even wickeder relations between males and females.
I paraphrase Mohamed’s frantic appeal for clarity. His children watch cartoons, and have stuffed toys, quilts and pillow cases with Mickey Mouse on them. Is all that halal? Now many of us detest the addictive and manipulative Disney brand which targets young children. But this fully grown, procreative adult cannot trust his own mind and seeks instructions from unverified voices of authority. How abject is that?
These global sites control people, push through Maoist “cleansing”. Miserable mullahs are closing down the Muslim mind and heart the world over. Meanwhile “true believers” desperately seek enslavement and thank their enslavers. The questions posed are startling in their naiveté. May we sing? Is it OK for a man to listen to a woman singer? Do I watch a female newsreader? Yes, says a wise one – as long as she is properly covered up and not wearing perfume. Don’t laugh. It is tragic, not funny.
Somehow in the last decade or so, millions of believers have been persuaded that they are repositories of sin because they watch films, love music and paintings, read books, experience temporal pleasures and ecstasies. Remember the ferocity with which the Taliban destroyed all pre-Islamic treasures? Saudi Arabia is guilty of similar vandalism. Thus they seek to recreate the piety of triumphant Islam. Well they didn’t have cameras, mobile phones, cars and computers then. Should these be banned too?
Muslim children are now programmed to obey – robbed of imagination, independent thought and refinement. UK Muslim parents are increasingly coming out against school visits, music and drama, novels, exercise, scientific facts. Teachers know these parental demands leave Muslim children under-educated and emotionally numbed, rendered unresponsive to artistic words, sights and sounds.
This is a travesty of our history, our love of truth and beauty, the intellectual energy that throughout history uplifted Muslim civilisations. The current Science Museum exhibition of Muslim inventions that shaped the modern world proves we were never the barbarians promoted in Western demonology. Some of the earliest manuals on surgery and optics, astronomy and flying machines came out of Muslim regions. And those same places were creative hubs producing great works of art, incredible buildings and intricate crafts.
There is no Koranic injunction against the depiction of the human form, yet pictures from previous ages would today not be painted – a kneeling, sensual angel by an Ottoman artist in the mid-16th century, a man filling his cup of wine. Passion plays were performed through the centuries in all main Arabian conurbations. Poetry was written and recited by both men and women. Music, devotional and romantic, was in every household. All that is under threat today.
The Pakistani blogger Raza Rumi writes: “Who are these butchers of culture? What religion do they follow? They have no religion except barbarism.” Exactly. British Muslims for Secular Democracy (of which I am chair), supported by the British Council, is tomorrow organising a conference on artistic and cultural freedom at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. Speakers include Miss Pakistan (who is also a professor), fashion designers, the entrepreneur Saira Khan, painters, stand-up comics, musicians, writers, others who are concerned. The event is open to all. Check the BMSD site. We will be launching an advisory guide for teachers on protecting the interests of the Muslim child.
Many sagacious websites will warn that mixing with us, people with faith who are also freethinkers, is definitely haram (a sin). That will keep away the born-again religious troglodytes. But our hope is that the nervous and undecided will turn up to listen to artists and entertainers – and throw off their chains. One artist I know put it beautifully: “Allah gave me my mind, my hands my eyes, my patience, my selfhood. I use all these gifts and show people the wonders of the world. How can that be wrong? Does God want us to be deaf, stupid and blind?”No, but God’s army sure does.

WHY THESE BUTCHERS ARE GAINING AN UPPER HAND .. IN OCCUPYING THE MENTAL LAND-SCAPE AMONG MUSLIMS ? This is because of the systemic failure in muslim societies. A complete breakdown. Lack of Democracy. Lack of Unity., and breakdown of institutions. People’s faith in the system stands shattered. Unemployment misery tears and crushed dreams are icing on the top of the cake. Add to that., the regular insults from the other side of the coin. THOSE who provide fuel to these BUTCHERS. For instance., a newsitem.. i reproduce below :
VHP leader Togadia gives call for economic boycott of Muslims in India
http://www.punjabnewsline.com/content/view/23318/38/
By Jagmohan Singh
AMRITSAR: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Praveen Togadia launching scathing attack on Muslims gave call of economic boycott of Muslims throughout India. During his visit in the city, addressing the seminar on Thursday evening at BBK DAV College for girls, Togadia said that members of Muslim community be boycotted as they should not be given employment anywhere in the country, even trade ties with Muslims shallbe scrapped.
Continuing his attack on Muslims, Togadia said when Muslims would not get any employment, trade and business in India would die with hunger then they would think to move to Pakistan. He said that every Indian should think to keep business ties with Hindus for the larger interest of the nation.
“We should not accommodate such people who were strongly advocating for Muslim community but such people should leave India for Pakistan”, Togadia quipped.
Strongly criticizing the Madarasa culture in India, Togadia said that all such kind of institutes should be closed forthwith as were creating terrorists and terrorism.
Lamenting on UPA Government, Togadia said that Union Government led by Congress allegedly keeping soft corner for Muslims as this policy was deadly against the well being of nation. He said that UPA Government was not serious enough to eradicate the roots of Muslims in India.
He said that Muslims were enjoying on the hard earned money of Hindus since heavy taxes being paid by Hindus to Government of India and Muslims were plundering.
Speaking about Mumbai attack, Togadia said that every Hindu has to assemble on Single platform to fight against the Muslims.
Attacking on West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya for ten percent reservation to Muslims, Togadia said that he was kind enough for Muslims to give them food but didn’t think for the well being of nation. He said ten percent reservation to Muslims mean direct attack on legitimate rights of Hindu.
Commenting on Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan, Togadia claimed that Khan was getting Rs. 25 crore for one movie and in such circumstances one could easily imagine the economic plight of Muslims in India
—— unquote——-
Togadia is not the official representative of Hinduism or India. But in his rallies, lakhs of people come to hear him. COmpared to 200 people who would come to hear Harsh Mandar. This trend 5 lakhs (mobocracy) versus 200 (democracy) is dangerous… Mobocracy is masquered as Democracy in India… which is deplorable… and must be corrected to save India from the Hindutva-Taliban.. who are as barbaric as their counterparts (if not more) in Afghanistan.. or Af-Pak !

Dear Author
Islam is about love, peace and lifestyle. This is not just a religion its a lifestyle in all means. Islam gives economic system, social justice system and political system. It guides human kind to a place where each and every one could live happy, So to make this world more beautiful Islam have its rules and regulations like every civilized society could have.
In Quran, Allah says, “Allah is beautiful and he loves beauty” and Quran encourage human to use his mind openly and think about this world. The very first word of Quran is “Iqra” which means Read. That is why Muslims has pride to take science and technology to its glory in Muslims Era. You could Google about Muslims achievements in science, technology and art.
Than why people think Islam is narrow minded or close minded. The answer is Islam has its own rules and limits. For instance, Islam loves art but if this art consist on a nude pornographic image or idol Islam don’t allow a Muslim to do so similarly Modern Society don’t let their kids to watch porn. So if you are a Muslim you can do every thing within the limits set by Islam. You can sing, you can play, you can have your couple, you can sex (with your wife only) and these all things are considered good acts but if you cross a limit you did a sin.
Right now Islamic World is ruled by the ones who don’t have a believe on Islam. They attack on Islamic Culture with false grounds. Their propaganda about Islam is not a matter of fact. And in secular states for instance France forbid their citizens to take hijab…. Is this a secular behavior… no not at all
Think
Bravo, I wish that more and more people with such convictions come out to speak against the tribal mind sets that are prevailing in all religions and make people respect and enjoy life in more humane way.
