Raza Rumi and Prof. Aminah Al-Deen discuss the alarming state of journalism and media in the United States. They discuss how all American mainstream media is owned by a handful of corporations, who act as arbiters of truth and (in Noam Chomsky’s memorable phrase) “manufacture consent”. Rumi and Al-Deen also talk about the lack of representation of different communities in newsrooms, the sharp decline in public-funded journalism, and the gross misrepresentation of public issues at home (the US) as compared with the rest of the world. Their discussion hones in on how American mainstream media deliberately sketches a partial and manipulative picture of reality – not unlike the media in many other countries, all of which have a shrinking space for democracy in common.
