Makhdoom a people’s poet – a poem
Found this poem and its translation by Makhdoom Mohiuddin here
Our city is strange –
it whispers in the
nights when you
walk on roads
calls you to show
its wounds as if
the secrets of
its heart
its windows shut
alleys quiet
walls tired
doors locked
only the corpses stayed
in rented houses for years.

Makhdoom a people’s poet: Abid Hussain Special Correspondent
Former Indian Ambassador to US recalls association with poet

HYDERABAD: Makhdoom Mohiuddin, poet-revolutionary of Hyderabad, was so pained by the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) that he actually wanted to go to Spain to fight the fascists.
The civil war appeared to have had a lasting impression and one could see change in form and content of Makhdoom’s poetry.
This turning point was discernible in his poem AndheraÂ.
His biographer Aleksey Sokhavich recorded how the Communist and trade union leader always had on his writing table, a copy of Guernica by Picasso.
Several such little known facets from the life and times of Makhdoom like this one by Ali Zaheer were in full flow at the two-day seminar organised by the Alam Khundmiri Foundation in association with National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) and AP Urdu Academy as part of his centenary celebrations here on Thursday.
Makhdoom’s associate B. Narsing Rao, in his paper, recalled the poet’s foray into writing plays, translation of Bernard Shaw and Anton Chekhov’s works and even staging them.
“His daring action was to stage Chekhov’s ‘Cherry Orchards’ translated by him into Urdu as Phool BanÂ. Freedom fighter and poet, Sarojini Naidu’s daughter, Lila Mani had a role in it, the first time ever for a woman, in Hyderabad’s then conservative society.
Abid Hussain, former Indian Ambassador to US, who inaugurated the seminar, recalled his association with Makhdoom and described him as a poet who won the hearts of the masses. His greatest gift was towards love. When love took the form of verse, poetry flowed. When it took the form of activity, it triggered revolution.
His stream of thinking revolved around love, lyrics and revolution, he said. Ali Javed, Director of NCPUL, said Makhdoom struck a balance between being a party activist and a poet which even Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Pakistan poet, could not.
The year-long centenary celebrations would see conduct of seminars in all important cities. State CPI secretary K. Narayana and State CPI (M) secretary B. V. Raghavulu spoke, while scholars from New Delhi, Aligarh and Kolkata besides Hyderabad presented papers.

The latter piece was included in a Hindi movie called Gaman starring Farooque Sheikh and Smita Patil. The movie was made in 1978 and the vocals for the ghazal were rendered by Chhaya Ganguly.

Ek Chameli Ke Mandve Tale
Makhdoom Mohiuddin…
Mai`kade se zara door uss mod par
Do badan pyaar ki aag mein jal gaye
ek chameli ke mandwe taley…
pyaar harf-e-vafa ~ pyaar unaka khuda ~ pyaar unaki chita
do badan pyaar ki aag mein jal gaye..
ek chameli ke…
O`ws mein bheeg`te ~ Chandni mein nahaa`te hue
Jaise do (2) taazaa-ru Taazaa-dam Phool pich`le paher
Thandi thandi subuk ra`u Chaman ki hava
Sarf-e-maatam hui !!!
Yeh bataa Chaaraagar …teri zambeel mein
Nusqaa-e-keemiyaa -e- muhabbat bhi hai ?
Kuchh ilaaj -o- mudaavaa-e- ulfat bhi hai ??
Do badan pyaar ki …

It was a very popular ghazal… sung by all and sundry in the Hyderabad of yester years… Subsequently it was used in a movie (Cha-cha-cha / circa 1964 / by Hyderabadi musician Iqbal Qureshi). This Ghazal was based on a real-life incident… where barbarians brutally killed 2 lovers (of different backgrounds).
ADDENDUM : Raza.. please add one line… before the last para:
Az Azal Taa Abad… yeh bataa chaara`gar !
Thanks a lot Raza saheb, for remembering a distinguished poet from my city (Hyderabad Deccan).

Bhagmathi (Lady Love) inspired and enticed Quli into love gazal. Similarly, there was lady love in Maqdoom’s life and literature also. Ms.Indira Dhanrajgir is life-force of Maqdoom’s love gazals. All his love gazals are addressed to her. Ms.Indira is Bhagmathi of Maqdoom’s life and 20th century urdu gazal. Indira Ji’s name appears conspicuously in several pages in his Magnum Opus ‘Bisat-e-Raksâ€. Without an elaborate discussion on this vital aspect any account of Maqdoom’s life or poetry is shallow and meaningless. All the researchers and critics should work on this component of Maqdoom’s literature.

Nusrath Mohiuddin S/o Maqdoom Mohiuddin passed away on 4.4.2013. RIP to his soul.
What is tragic is to whom he was close to during his life time did not turn up to pay last tributes to him . Indira Dhanrajgir who was close to his father for decades did not bother to see his mortal remains. Nusrath was loyal and committed to her till the last moment. He used to be with her in all her meetings and family get togethers. Even when Maqdoom passed away she did not visit his house to pay last tribute. Maqdoom sahab passed away in Delhi and his body was brought to Hyderabad in August 1969. She was holidaying in Mauritius with her new love. Such people have no human values / sentiments.
